Usana Health Sciences – A Background

Usana Health Sciences, Inc. is a multi-level marketing company based in Utah and engaged in the production of different nutritional products and dietary supplements. Most Usana products are produced in the West Valley City facility of the company, and can abe purhased in at least 20 countries through independent but networked distributors called “associates. Usana makes itself known in the market as a personalized health product brand that lets consumers reflect on their personal choices in life, and how their total quality of life is affected by their behavior from day to day.

An immunologist and microbiologist by the name of Myron Wentz founded Usana. The company’s products can only be purchased from distributors or by direct order and are not available via retail channels.

Product Line

There are three major product lines under Usana, including Nutritionals (nutrition essentials), Usana Diet & Energy (weight control), and Sens? personal care (skin and beauty). Only 10% of Usana products are not manufactured in-house.

There is a good number of Usana Nutritionals products which are listed on Australia’s REgister of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Many products in general are certified by NSF International for label accuracy and classified as “Dietary Supplements.”

Usana was tested by ConsumerLab.com in 2011, along with 37 other top multivitamin and multimineral products in the American and Canadian markets.

It passed the test, which covered specific index elements, the products’ ability to dissolve in solution as per guidelines set by the U.S. Pharmacopeia, threshold for lead contamination as per California Proposition 65, and labeling requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Usana sells its products mainly through non-employee distributors or “associates” and through the Internet. Associates make money through commissions on their own sales and the sales of their recruited distributors, otherwise known as their “downlines.” The compensation system of the company includes commissionable “points that distributors can earn for sales volume. Usana associates are bound by an agreement with the company which keeps them from making false income claims to potential distributor recruits, and from making health claims to market the company’s products.

Many athletic organizations have benefited from Usana’s sponsorship, thanks to the company’s “Athlete Guarantee Program.” The company selects athletes for the program, and should any of these chosen athletes test positive for a banned substance because of consuming Usana products, he or she will be compensated up to two times the money they make yearly up to a maximum of $1 million.

Usana also partnered with the WTA tour in a co-sponsorship agreement in 2006, which was extended in 2011. The 2011 agreement includes Usana giving $1 to the Children’s Hunger Fund with every ace that would be scored at a WTA tournament, right from Wimbledon to the end of the season.

In 2003, Usana became the USANA Ampitheatre’s title sponsor, a 20,000-seating outdoor ampitheature built in West Valley City, Utah. United Concerts, in 2012, announced Usana would keep its naming rights until March 2018.
